Why Aren’t Turkey Eggs Consumed?

In fact, the average American eats about 250 chicken eggs a year. These are called “hen eggs.” We’ve also started trying other tasty and interesting types, like the rich, huge yolks of duck eggs, the tiny treats of quail eggs, and the emu egg, which can technically be eaten. But have you ever had a bird egg? Or have you thought about it? Most likely not.

But why not? You can actually eat turkey eggs: People who have turkeys in their yards say that their eggs taste a lot like chicken eggs. The shell is a little tougher, and the layer between the shell and the egg is a little thicker. Other than that, they’re not too different. The National Turkey Federation says that the US raised more than 233 million turkeys in 2015. In the United States, turkey is the fourth most popular meal, after chicken, beef, and pork. There are lots of turkeys around! What’s going on? Why are there not many turkey eggs?

The answer is a lot of different things, and they all pretty much mean that turkey farmers have decided not to go into the egg market. One thing is that turkeys don’t lay eggs as often as other birds do. A chicken or duck lays about one egg a day, but a turkey only lays two or three eggs a week at most. Also, turkeys cost more to raise in a factory because they need more food and room than chickens.

Even worse, turkeys take a long time to lay eggs. The National Turkey Federation’s Kimmon Williams says that turkeys need to be about 7 months old before they can lay eggs. This is because they have a longer life cycle. For chickens, it only takes about 5 months. This may not seem like a long time, but turkeys cost more to house and feed, so those extra few months can add up.

Turkey eggs are generally a lot more expensive than regular chicken eggs. They cost more to make and are harder to find, so each egg costs about $3, which is about the same as two dozen regular chicken eggs. So, a fertilized egg is worth a lot more than an egg that people can eat. It makes more sense to raise more turkeys instead of selling their eggs.

Turkey is the fourth most popular meat in the U.S., after chicken, beef, and pork. While we usually think of it as a Thanksgiving dish, people eat it all year long. Although this is the case, turkey eggs are not available in grocery shops or even specialty stores. But that doesn’t seem to affect how good they are to eat. It is said that the eggs left by this all-American bird taste just as good as chicken eggs, or even better, but they are not practical to make.

Modern Farmer says that most farmers who already raise turkeys for killing can’t make money by selling their eggs. Turkey females can only lay two eggs a week when they are fully grown. Chickens and ducks, on the other hand, lay about one egg every day. Due to their longer lives, turkeys take about 7 months instead of 5 to reach the age where they can lay eggs. The bigger birds need more room and food to live on a farm than the smaller ones. When you consider the time and materials needed to make them, turkey eggs cost more than $3 each, which is almost twice as much as a carton of twelve chicken eggs.

There are many expensive foods that cost more than $3. Are turkey eggs worth the extra money? The truth is probably not, since people who have tried the product say it tastes like a much cheaper chicken egg. The size of the eggs is the main difference between them. Turkey eggs are a bit bigger than other eggs, and their shells and membranes are harder and thicker.

Some experts say that turkey eggs do have a few benefits over eggs from other kinds of birds. They are said to have creamier and richer yolks that are great for recipes. Well-known Victorian-era cook Alexis Soyer said they were also better for baking than chicken eggs.

It’s not hard to find turkey eggs if you want to try them for yourself. Check with a turkey farm near you to see if they sell their eggs. They might go well with the leftovers from Thanksgiving that you eat for breakfast on Friday.
